Sony State of Play: when is the next PlayStation event and what to expect?

Sony State of Play is a semi-regular digital event, showcasing the biggest and latest PlayStation news, updates, reveals and announcements.

Since the showcase began in 2019, we've seen Sony use State of Play to reveal The Last of Us 2 release date, debut gameplay footage for Ghost of Tsushima, and drop new trailers for games including Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Returnal. So it's always worth tuning in to State of Play for the latest, big announcements on PS5 games, PSVR games and PS4 games.

Sony has confirmed the next Sony State of Play event will take place on May 27 and will focus on Horizon Forbidden West. Here's everything you need to know about the next Sony State of Play.

The next Sony State of Play event will take place on May 27 at 2pm PDT / 10pm BST / 5pm EDT (or May 28 at 7am AEST), and you can tune in via Twitch or YouTube. You can also tune in at 9am PDT / 5pm BST / 12pm EDT for the special State of Play Pre-Show.

Sony has confirmed that the 20-minute showcase will debut Horizon Forbidden West gameplay for the first time.

The last State of Play (episode 9) took place on April 29, 2021, with the one prior to that taking place on February 25, 2021 and the one before that taking place on August 6, 2020. While last year, the interim between these showcases was filled with some PS5 specific events, typically we see State of Play taking place every three or four months - and ahead of upcoming big releases. More recently, we've seen Sony hosting State of Plays more often - likely because it has a few big games in the works right now.

We expect the next Sony State of Play after this one to take place potentially in June. Although the company isn't taking part in E3 2021, it is confirmed to be taking part in Summer Game Fest. We're expecting the company to hold its own showcase under the Summer Game Fest umbrella, as well as debuting some new details on upcoming titles during the Summer Game Fest world premiere showcase. Though, this may not be an actual State of Play event and may have a different name.

Sony has confirmed that it will reveal debut Horizon Forbidden West gameplay footage for the first time during its State of Play on May 27.

According to Sony, the 20-minute showcase will show a total of 14 minutes of "brand new in-game action" featuring Aloy - captured on a PS5.

We're hoping that, in addition to shedding some light on what's new with Horizon Forbidden West - after all Sony has kept tight-lipped about it for 11 months now - that this showcase will also reveal the official Horizon Forbidden West release date.

What was revealed at the last Sony State of Play?

Sony's last State of Play live stream took place on April 29 and focused on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. The event showcased 15 minutes of new gameplay footage for the highly-anticipated sequel, which showed off some of Ratchet's new moves, such as his dash and wall-running capabilities, as well as gameplay of the newly-introduced Rivet, a female Lombax who players will also get to control. The two of them share an incredible arsenal of weapons and gadgets, with both new gear and returning staples of the franchise.

Two indie titles were also shown during the last State of Play: Subnautica: Below Zero and Among Us. Subnautica: Below Zero is coming to PS5 on May 14, 2021 and is targeting 60fps in performance mode, with DualSense implementation. While Among Us is coming to PS4 and PS5 at some point later in 2021, and will even feature a Ratchet and Clank outfit exclusive to Sony console version of Among Us, though no exact release date or any other details (such as cross-play) were given.
